One room that never matches the rest is the most common HVAC complaint in Middle Tennessee, and the equipment is almost never the cause. It is usually the duct serving that room, the envelope around it, or both.
The bonus room problem
A room over a garage has conditioned space on one side and unconditioned space below, plus more exterior wall and roof than anywhere else in the house. It has the largest heat load and usually the longest, thinnest duct run.
That combination means it gets the most heat and the least air. Adjusting the thermostat cannot fix a supply that is undersized for the load.
What to check before spending
Confirm air is actually arriving. Hold a tissue at the register — weak flow points at a crushed or disconnected flex duct, which is common in attics where other trades have worked.
Then look at the return. A room with supply but no return path pressurises slightly and stops accepting air. Undercut doors or a transfer grille solve it cheaply.
- Check supply flow at the register with the system running
- Confirm a return path exists, including under the door
- Look in the attic for crushed, kinked or disconnected flex duct
- Check the attic insulation depth over that room
- Verify dampers in the trunk are open
Balancing, and its limits
Balancing dampers redistribute air rather than create it. Closing supplies to cooler rooms pushes more air to the hot one, and it works when the imbalance is modest.
Closing too many registers raises static pressure across the system, which reduces total airflow and can freeze the coil. Balancing is a redistribution, not a capacity increase.
When the answer is a separate system
Where the load is genuinely beyond what the duct can carry, a ductless mini-split serving that room is usually cheaper and far more effective than reworking the duct system.
It also solves the underlying mismatch: the bonus room needs cooling on a different schedule from the rest of the house, and a dedicated head lets it have one.
