Middle Tennessee winters are mild enough that a heat pump works well here for most of the season, and cold enough that the exceptions matter. The decision comes down to your gas availability, your insulation, and how you feel about supply air that is warm rather than hot.
How each behaves in a Nashville winter
A heat pump moves heat rather than making it, which is very efficient down to around freezing and progressively less so below. Modern variable-speed units hold useful capacity into the twenties, which covers most Nashville nights.
A gas furnace makes the same heat at the same cost regardless of outside temperature. It delivers noticeably hotter supply air, which some people strongly prefer.
Where the running cost lands
It depends on the ratio between local electricity and gas prices, and that ratio genuinely moves. A modern heat pump in a Nashville winter is usually competitive with gas and often cheaper across the season.
The bigger variable is the house. In a poorly insulated house the heat pump runs into its auxiliary electric strips more often, and those are expensive. Insulation improves a heat pump’s economics more than it improves a furnace’s.
Auxiliary heat is where bills go wrong
Every heat pump has backup, usually electric resistance strips. They engage when the pump cannot keep up, and they use a great deal of power. A thermostat set back ten degrees overnight will call for strips to recover in the morning.
That is why the standard advice with a heat pump is small setbacks rather than large ones — the opposite of the advice for a gas furnace.

The dual-fuel option
A dual-fuel system pairs a heat pump with a gas furnace and switches between them at a chosen outdoor temperature. It gives you heat-pump efficiency in the forties and gas heat in the twenties.
It costs more up front and makes most sense where gas is already at the house and the equipment is being replaced anyway. Running a new gas line purely to enable it rarely pays.
